Hello, I'm Sian and welcome to my website.

I'm a recent BA Costume Design and Making Graduate who specialises in costume construction. Over my time at University I have completed an array of projects that have pushed and expanded my construction knowledge and making abilities.

Designing has allowed me to understand costume, its functionality and the impact it has on characterisation. Through my construction journey I have come to realise my passion for costume is in the making.

My interests and strengths in particular being within textiles, embroidery and the finer details of costuming, finding ways to hint at character and personality through props, decoration and fabric choices. This interest in detail has allowed me to successfully create costumes that not only are fit for purpose but aid the performers embodiment of character.

I have always been drawn to film and musicals and have always attended the cinema and theatre productions. Over the years my interests and understanding of the elements involved in the overall production has expanded and my appreciation for costume and its role within productions grew. A particular visit to watch Les Misérables in London sparked my desire to work within the costume industry, the way in which costume portrayed class, lifestyle and character  made me want to learn more about the process and the way in which fabric was manipulated a distressed to represent those elements.

Another moment of inspiration came from seeing The Lion King in the West End. The wonderful spectacle of this production and its blend of costume and puppetry was inspired. The use of textures, colours, patterns and fabrics was incredible at creating and allowing movement and representing the animalistic essences of each character's.

These experiences have allowed me to explore those methods and ways of considering how costume represents and builds character particularly through my final major University project. I wanted to explore various construction techniques, skills such as casting, millinery and embroidery and capture the essence of these characters personalities through the clothing.
